Update 12 May 2009

Hello all, the days are just flying by as the work continues non stop on Construction and Repairs. Since arriving in the area we have designed or assisted in the design of over 450 projects for the southern region of Afghanistan. The number of projects currently underway is flat out amazing. Most of the work be being accomplished by large contractors who are aided by local national laborers.

There are two prevalent thoughts about the local national labor force. Some feel we should use them and never take our eyes off of them as they perform their simple tasks, basically never let your guard down, trust them or become friends with them. Others feel that we should treat the locals good as they in the end will do a better job and learn to better their own lives while learning how to potentially speak a bit of English or learn a skill. I have to admit that I lean more towards the 2nd choice as 95% of those I have had a chance to meet simply want to better their lives.

It is true that we can't let our guard down so everyday before we ever get to see our labor force they are fully searched and screened. Once screened it would seem as though they are then less harmful, right. That covers the situations and projects upon the Base, what about all of the projects off the base, the ones while I seem to get to manage. These locals never get searched or scanned as they never go through any gate. How do we watch them as we are actually only around the projects for a short while each day as we then move on to other projects. We simply have to keep our eyes on them a bit better and never fully let our guard down.I still walk right up to our laborers and shake their hands and take pictures when something different is happening. In reality we watch their eyes so that we can see if anything seems out of sorts. We watch for new workers and or ones who will not engage with us as they are being standoffish. It's will never be 100% fool proof yet it's the best we can do to ensure we stay safe yet a bit friendly with those who simply wish to make a living.

From my neck of the woods to yours (oh I wish there were actually some woods around here) stay safe and smile always. A thought for your day; "Accept the fact that some days you're the pigeon, and some days you're the statue and life will be enjoyable".

I love you all. Lincoln

Wow, not knowing whether friend or foe can be tricky. You may have the best idea--just keep your eyes and ears open and watch. It would be hard not to be suspicious of everyone. Keep safe.

Is your quote saying that sometimes you poop on people and sometimes you get pooped on? You'll have to explain when you get home.
