Update from Afghanistan 25 April 2009

In an effort to be a bit nice to the local kids we often pass out hard candy through one of the windows of the hummer. We typically plan this for an area and or time when very few kids are around the hummer as it basically becomes a bit nerve racking if a hundred kids are surrounding the hummer while you are striving to drive slowly through them.

Yesterday however it was bad......we had finished checking on our job sites and were slowly driving through a crowded section of the small village we must go through when we were overrun, yep I consider it being overrun by numerous kids who simply wanted a small piece of candy. We passed out the small bag of candy and started to move slowly forward as obviously we don't want to run over any toes when all of the sudden our back on the hummer pops open. These hummers have a very heavy back hatch on them that one must climb upon the hummer and pull up hard in order to get it open. During the few seconds we were stopped to pass out some candy we had a couple of the kids jump up on the back of the hummer and pull the latch on the back hatch so that it popped open. Within two seconds all of us were out of the vehicle pushing our way to the back and pulling these two kids off of the hummer. It appeared as though another kid had fallen off in his attempt to get up on the hummer as he was laying down holding his arm. Anyway, we yelled and told them that because they would not stay away we were no longer going to bring them any candy. Most of the kids in this area speak some English as it is taught in all of the schools and thus several of the kids knew what we were saying and started yelling at the others to get back or there would be no more candy in the future. We closed the hatch, secured it, got back in the hummer and slowly drove off.

Later we realized how easy it would have been for one of the kids to pop the hatch and throw an IED (improvised explosive devise) into the back and you guessed it, no more hummer. So, we are now going to simply avoid the whole area and yep, lock our hatch. It reminded me of how we always strive to lock our cars when we drive around in any city, oh how silly we were here to have not locked the hatch. This was a lesson well taught and one we will take to heart.

Hope all of you stay safe and talk to you all soon.

Love Lincoln.

I'm so glad you're safe! It's so sad that you always have to be on your guard, even against children.
